Required documents and steps for the application

For admission to the master program a Bachelor or equivalent academic degree is required. For prospective students with a Bachelor degree which is not in Communication Science or a related field, a selected number of additional courses in theory and methods may be prescribed.

The University of Vienna limits the number of students newly admitted to the English master program 'Communication Science' to 30 persons per academic year.


Required steps

From 1 March 2017 onwards, you can apply for admission via U:SPACE. As a prospective student, you have to register in U:SPACE first in order to apply for admission. As a student, you log in to U:SPACE and apply for admission to degree programmes.

Please upload your application documents at U:SPACE, including the follwing documents:

  • Bachelor Diploma (scanned in pdf-format), or a letter of reference by your current institution stating that you will receive your bachelor degree by September 15th
  • Diploma Supplement, Transcript of Records or Consolidated Grade Record (scanned in pdf-format)
  • Proof of English proficiency (see below)
  • Statement of purpose (see below)
  • Full curriculum vitae in English
  • Proof of identity (passport or student card of the University of Vienna)

Documents which are not originally issued in either German or English need to be presented both in original as well as in translation to either English or German. The translation must be done by an officially registered translator. A further legalisation or notarisation of documents or their translation is not necessary for applications to this master program.

Proof of English proficiency

This can be either:

a) a language certificate on level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (TOEFL minimum scores: 570 paper-based, 87 internet-based; IELTS minimum score 6,5; Cambridge English First Certificate (FCE) - from grade C: minimum score 160; Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE): Level B2; Language Center at the University of Vienna: Niveau B2) or

b) any equivalent proof.

The document proving the applicant’s English proficiency must be issued no more than three years prior to the application.


Statement of purpose

The statement of purpose should be approximately 1000 words in length, and address the following questions in clearly separated sections:

  • What is your personal motivation to apply for this program?
  • In which ways do you think your prior experiences, qualifications, and skills will support your studies in this new domain?
  • What do you expect to learn in doing the master program, and which role does it play in your further academic, personal, and professional development?

The document must be written in English, page numbered, and in A4 format. The name of the applying student as well as the word count of the document must be included in the document header.
